Floods, Famines, and Emperors

Posted by admin on May 16, 2012

floods
Product DescriptionIn 1997 and early 1998, one of the most powerful El Niños ever recorded disrupted weather patterns all over the world. Europe suffered through a record freeze as the American West was hit with massive Floods and snowstorms; in the western Pacific, meanwhile, some island nations literally went bone dry and had to have water flown in on transport planes. Such effects are not new: climatologists now know the El Niño and other climate anomalies have been disrupting weather patterns throughout history. But until recently, no one had asked how this new understanding of the global weather system related to archaeology and history. Droughts, floods, heat and cold put stress on cultures and force them to adapt. What determines whether they adapt successfully? How do these climate stresses affect a people’s faith in the foundations of their society and the legitimacy of their rulers? How vulnerable is our own society to climate change? In this dazzlingly original new book, archaeologist Brian Fagan shows that short-term climate shifts have been a major—and hitherto unrecognized—force in history. El Niño-driven droughts have brought on the collapse of dynasties in Egypt; El Niño monsoon failures have caused historic famines in India; and El Niño floods have destroyed whole civilizations in Peru. Other short-term climate changes may have caused the mysterious abandonment of the Anasazi dwellings in the American Southwest and the collapse of the ancient Maya empire, as well as changed the course of European history. This beautifully written, groundbreaking book opens a new door on our understanding of historical events.

Flooding in Burma

Posted by admin on May 16, 2012

floodsHundreds of people are thought to be dead or missing after severe flooding in central Burma.

As floodwaters disperse the scale of the destruction in Burma’s Magwe division is becoming clear.

In Pakokku more than 1700 are still in temporary shelters, many have lost their homes, their livelihoods and their loved ones.

In the early hours of October 20th flood waters surged into the area, uprooting trees and houses while many were still sleeping.

Domestic news are quoting the official number of dead and missing at 215. But as bodies continue to be recovered some estimate the actual death toll could be far higher.

And 3 days after Floods hit, towns such as Kyaukse, home of Burma’s former dictator Than Shwe, are still submerged.

Those who have lost their homes and families in the flood say they didn’t receive any warnings that the floods were coming

One woman told DVB reporters that she had seen her family swept away by the flood waters right in front of her, and said they had not been warned floods were coming by authorities.

While some have been able to salvage part of their homes, swamped by the sands, some monastries and homes have been swept away completely.

And although some local charities have begun a rescue effort, collapsed bridges, destroyed roads and disrupted power lines are causing difficulties.

This normally dry and sandy land, thrown into turmoil in the wake of the floods, is likely to take time to rebuild. With some too distraught to return to work, and many forced to remain in the camps while the rescue effort continues, it may be a while before the area can return to normal.

Will the Republicans learn to appreciate the importance of federal govt from the recent tornadoes and floods?

Posted by admin on May 13, 2012

The recent tragedies that hit the southern states (Tornadoes and Mississippi River Floods) caused massive damages to homes and businesses. In times like these, we learn that only the federal government has the power and the money to alleviate the suffering of the citizens. Will the Republicans finally stop insulting "big government" and learn to appreciate that it has more of an active role than just defense? It is good to see the Republican state governors standing with Obama and showing appreciation for the federal government’s role.

Republicans operate by the principle that the federal government should help them but shouldn’t help other people, especially not people that they don’t like. Everything else that they may say about the federal government is hypocritical nonsense. So, no, they won’t learn anything until they get past their narrow-minded, short-sighted, selfish views.
