Product DescriptionCritical Praise for Infinite Monster

”Infinite Monster is a deeply moving, harrowing account of one America’s great cities–Galveston–being ravaged by Hurricane Ike. Highly recommended!” —Douglas Brinkley, professor of History at Rice University and author of The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast

”Infinite Monster deserves a place alongside Isaac’s Storm and A Weekend in September as a tale of a star-crossed city’s struggle to endure the ravages of a mammoth Hurricane. Leigh Jones’ and Rhiannon Meyers’ meticulous reporting chronicles the dramatic personal stories that took place on the night Hurricane Ike made landfall and the controversial decisions that had to be made in the storm’s aftermath.” —Paul Burka, Senior Executive Editor, Texas Monthly

”This is a wonderful book, filled with stories that made me angry (all over again), made me smile, and a few that made me cry. The only story Leigh and Rhiannon don t tell here is their own two young women who lost nearly all they owned to Hurricane Ike but fought on to tell the story. I could not be prouder of these two and the rest of our valiant and resourceful staff at The Daily News.” —Dolph Tillotson, publisher of The Galveston County Daily News

Product Description

In 2008, Hurricane Ike swept the Gulf of Mexico into Galveston, submerging 75 percent of the city, shredding entire buildings to splinters, and turning out rich and poor alike from their beloved island home.

Scores of private interviews expose the politics of recovery, the destitution of loss, and the revelry of rebirth. Award-winning Galveston County Daily News reporters Leigh Jones and Rhiannon Meyers deliver the story about one of America’s largest hurricanes through the voices of those who lived it.

Survivors who did return to the island waded through not only mounds of toxic debris, but also a dense and seemingly endless bureaucracy that threatened to stifle recovery before it even began.

Like a phantom reincarnation of its 1900 ancestor, Hurricane Ike was the Infinite Monster that would forever cloud the Gulf Coast’s future.

I want to be a meteorologist and a storm chaser when I grow up. I’ll be 17 next month. Is there an ae requirement to become a Storm Chaser? What are the requirements to become a certified storm chaser and how much more benefits would I have? Would I be able to stay during a mandatory evacuating to film the eye wall of a category 5 Hurricane? Would I be able to film a Tornado and leave the classroom if it comes to my school during the school day without getting in any trouble? Sources?

Storm chasers are not certified by any government or professional organization. Some people do it for a living and can be called professional storm chasers, and meteorologists can go out in the field for storm data, but for most storm chasers it’s a hobby. There is no such thing as an "emergency storm photographer."

If you’re interested in weather, stay in school and learn all you can about it. I suspect that weather research will be a growth industry in the near future, with good career opportunities.

(AGW disclaimer: This is about weather, not climate.)

Dixie Alley Outbreak

April 27th, 2011 will go down as the deadliest tornado day in well over half a century. Hundreds of twisters are touching down all over parts of Mississippi and Alabama known to chasers as “Dixie Alley”. There are multiple confirmed EF-5 Tornadoes, the most powerful classification. Teams Dominator, TWISTEX and TIV are all in Dixie Alley and on the hunt, with front row seats to some of the day’s most breathtaking storms. Acting as storm spotters, they’re reporting the tornadoes and attempting to get warnings out. But when a violent twister tracks toward the heart of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, all three teams are faced with death and destruction on an unimaginable scale.

Product DescriptionIn 1997 and early 1998, one of the most powerful El Niños ever recorded disrupted weather patterns all over the world. Europe suffered through a record freeze as the American West was hit with massive Floods and snowstorms; in the western Pacific, meanwhile, some island nations literally went bone dry and had to have water flown in on transport planes. Such effects are not new: climatologists now know the El Niño and other climate anomalies have been disrupting weather patterns throughout history. But until recently, no one had asked how this new understanding of the global weather system related to archaeology and history. Droughts, floods, heat and cold put stress on cultures and force them to adapt. What determines whether they adapt successfully? How do these climate stresses affect a people’s faith in the foundations of their society and the legitimacy of their rulers? How vulnerable is our own society to climate change? In this dazzlingly original new book, archaeologist Brian Fagan shows that short-term climate shifts have been a major—and hitherto unrecognized—force in history. El Niño-driven droughts have brought on the collapse of dynasties in Egypt; El Niño monsoon failures have caused historic famines in India; and El Niño floods have destroyed whole civilizations in Peru. Other short-term climate changes may have caused the mysterious abandonment of the Anasazi dwellings in the American Southwest and the collapse of the ancient Maya empire, as well as changed the course of European history. This beautifully written, groundbreaking book opens a new door on our understanding of historical events.

This book is a documentary of the 1968 F5 tornado that hit Tracy Minnesota on June 13, 1968. Nine people lost their lives in the storm, including a baby who was sucked out of her mother’s arms, and many others were injured. The tornado ripped a path through the heart of town. This Tornado was well documented and a photo of this storm remains today as one of the most seen tornado photos of all time.
