Flooding in Burma

Posted by admin on May 16, 2012

floodsHundreds of people are thought to be dead or missing after severe flooding in central Burma.

As floodwaters disperse the scale of the destruction in Burma’s Magwe division is becoming clear.

In Pakokku more than 1700 are still in temporary shelters, many have lost their homes, their livelihoods and their loved ones.

In the early hours of October 20th flood waters surged into the area, uprooting trees and houses while many were still sleeping.

Domestic news are quoting the official number of dead and missing at 215. But as bodies continue to be recovered some estimate the actual death toll could be far higher.

And 3 days after Floods hit, towns such as Kyaukse, home of Burma’s former dictator Than Shwe, are still submerged.

Those who have lost their homes and families in the flood say they didn’t receive any warnings that the floods were coming

One woman told DVB reporters that she had seen her family swept away by the flood waters right in front of her, and said they had not been warned floods were coming by authorities.

While some have been able to salvage part of their homes, swamped by the sands, some monastries and homes have been swept away completely.

And although some local charities have begun a rescue effort, collapsed bridges, destroyed roads and disrupted power lines are causing difficulties.

This normally dry and sandy land, thrown into turmoil in the wake of the floods, is likely to take time to rebuild. With some too distraught to return to work, and many forced to remain in the camps while the rescue effort continues, it may be a while before the area can return to normal.

Australia Flooding After Record Rains

Posted by admin on May 7, 2012

floodsMany areas of New South Wales and Victoria, Australia flooded on Thursday following several days of heavy rains. The areas experienced the heaviest rainfall in decades, and dams are full to bursting.

New South Wales local media said that about three quarters of the state is either threatened by imminent flooding or already underwater. State Emergency Service volunteers are warning many residents to stock up on supplies or evacuate their homes.

In Sydney, the Warragamba Dam is nearing its maximum capacity for the first time in 14 years. Officials are planning to release the water late Thursday in order to prevent damage.

“We need to release that water to protect the structural integrity of the dam,” the Sydney Catchment Authority’s Ian Tanner told reporters.

However, spilling the dam will put parts of western Sydney under flood watch.

In Leviticus and Deuteronomy, God promises that when we obey Him, He will provide rain in due season when and where it is needed. The flooding underway in Australia is not random and senseless; it is yet another sign of mankind’s persistent refusal to obey God’s law.

Hurricane Wilma (High Quality) – Belle Meade, Florida – October 24, 2005

Posted by admin on Feb 11, 2012

hurricaneBetween October 15th and 26th, 2005 Hurricane Wilma, became the 22nd named storm, 13th hurricane, sixth major hurricane and fourth Category Five hurricane of the record-shattering 2005 season. Hurricane Wilma also has the distinction of producing the lowest central pressure on record in the Atlantic basin.

From October 15th – 17th Hurricane Wilma gradually organized from an area of disturbed weather over the western Caribbean Sea. Over a 30 hour period from the afternoon of the18th through the morning of the 19th, Hurricane Wilma underwent explosive deepening with the central pressure falling 100 mb to a record low value of 882 mb (26.05 in) and maximum sustained winds reaching 185 mph (160 kts) with peak gusts over 200 mph (175 kts). After reaching peak intensity, Wilma began an eyewall replacement cycle and weakend slightly, however the hurricane was still a powerful Category Four with sustained winds of 150 mph (130 kts) as it moved slowly over Cozumel, Mexico and the extreme northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula from the 21st through the 23rd.

By the time Hurricane Wilma emerged from the Mexican mainland, on the afternoon of the 23rd, it had weakened significantly. However, the storm began to restrengthen over the eastern Gulf of Mexico as it accelerated to the northeast, ahead of an approaching trough. Hurricane Wilma regained Category Three strength with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (110 kts) just before landfall on the southwest coast of Florida, near Cape Romano.

Wilma was a very large storm that produced hurricane condtions across almost all of the southern Florida peninsula. The highest winds reported during Hurricane Wilma’s landfall in Florida were 121 mph (105 kts) at the Collier County EOC near Naples; 117 mph (102 kts) at the Belle Glade SFWMD station and 113 mph (98 kts) at Loxahatchee. The hurricane’s minimum central pressure at landfall was 950 mb (28.05 in).

From the evening of October 23rd through mid-morning on the 24th, Storm Chaser Michael Laca intercepted Hurricane Wilma near the point of landfall on the southwest coast Florida, at Belle Meade, near Marco Island. At my location I encountered sustained winds near 100 mph (85 kts) with peak gusts near 120 mph (105 kts).

Hurricane Wilma moved rapidly across the Florida peninsula and exited the east coast near Jupiter, Florida with maximum winds reduced to near 110 mph (95 kts). The storm restrengthend and once again became a major hurricane, before finally transitioning into a large extra-tropical cyclone over the northern Atlantic.

Across its several landfalls, Hurricane Wilma was responsible for $29.1 billion (adjusted) in damage and 63 direct fatalities.

Visit http://tinyurl.com/24ptdcr for a stunning image gallery of the flooding caught after this was filmed.

Between May 1st and May 2nd, 2010, Middle Tennessee received the greatest amount of rainfall in recorded history. It has left us with several casualties, millions of dollars in damage and an indelible mark on our city. This video shows but a small sample of the destruction and mayhem wrought by this disaster. Please pray for those affected by this tragedy.

For those who have asked, this was shot handheld with a Canon 5D Mark II. I used Canon’s 35mm, 50mm and 85mm prime lenses.

I feel so blessed by the outpouring of support for this video. I hope it has helped to get the word out. This has been featured by the following sources:
