North-east Japan has been swamped by a major tsunami – and the entire Pacific region is now on alert. There’s a major search and rescue operation underway in Japan. 300 hundred military planes and 40 ships have joined the mission to survey the damage. It’s the north east of Japan which has been worst hit by the massive Tsunami caused by the biggest in nearly a century and a half. At the centre the city of Sendai, where the worst is feared for hundreds perhaps thousands of people. The official figure of dead is currently 95 and rising. And thr threat from the monster waves goes all around the Pacific basin with strong aftershocks still being felt. Alerts have been put in place as far away as California all the way to Alaska.

Video of cars, ships wrecked by tsunami waves after Japan earthquake

Northern Japan has been swamped by a major Tsunami – and the entire Pacific region is now on alert. It was caused by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck 130 kilometres off the eastern coast – sending a 4-metre wall of water inland, causing widespread devastation. So far, 23 people are confirmed dead – but that number’s expected to rise. The first wave has also reached Russia’s Kuril islands to the north, reportedly around a metre high. In Japan, 200 people have reportedly been washed away, with several others missing on Japan’s Sendai island. Tokyo’s been all-but shut down – with fires and injuries widely reported there. Millions are without electricity. Norita International Airport has been shut down. Hawaii is now bracing for a destructive wave to reach its shores within the next few hours.

Tsunami Climbing: Incredible video of ship heading into wave in Japan

The Japanese coast guard released a video on Saturday showing the massive Tsunami waves swelling in the sea off the coast of northern Japan, after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck offshore on March 11. The footage showed the first huge wave rising up above the prow of the coastguard ship as it sailed straight towards it. Two more waves followed.

New dramatic video: Tsunami wave spills over seawall, smashes boats, cars

tsunamiFollow latest updates at http://twitter.com/rt_com and http://www.facebook.com/RTnews Dramatic new pictures emerged on Sunday of a tsunami wave smashing into the Japanese town of Miyako, in Iwate Prefecture, on Friday. The wave crashes over the seawall carrying away everything in its path, including boats that topple over the wall and are smashed into a bridge. Cars were simply washed away, crashing into each other and buildings. More than 1,400 people were killed by the quake and resulting Tsunamis and hundreds more were still missing, according to officials, but police in one of the worst-hit areas estimated the number of dead there alone could eventually top 10,000.

Residents stranded on rooftops in the city of Kesennuma, in Japan’s northeastern Miyagi prefecture, were rescued by helicopter on Saturday, after the area around their homes was inundated with water, mud and fallen trees following Friday’s huge earthquake and Tsunami.

Strong 8.9 earthquake rocks Japan, tsunami hits North East

A large Tsunami is sweeping through north-eastern Japan, following an earthquake thought to have been 8.9 on the Richter Scale. The first wave has also reached Russia’s Kuril islands to the north, reportedly around a metre high. 11-thousand people are being evacuated from the area. In northern Japan, water is surging inland in Sed-ay, some 350km north of Tokyo. There’s considerable damage and many casualties – although numbers can’t be confirmed because communications are badly-affected. Several people are missing. The lower floors of buildings on Honshu island are being flooded and cars overturned. A bridge has also collapsed. Tokyo’s Norita International Airport has also closed. The quake’s epicenter was located 130 kilometres off Japan’s Pacific coast. A tsunami warning’s now in place across the entire Pacific region.

Video of ‘tsunami dog’ rescued in Japan after 3 weeks at sea

tsunamiA dog which was rescued at sea off the coast of Kesennuma, Japan, on Friday after being found drifting on a roof is believed to have survived for three weeks after being washed away by the killer Tsunami triggered by the March 11 earthquake. Coast guard members aboard a helicopter involved in the day’s search for those still missing after the disaster found the dog on the roof drifting along some 1.8 kilometres off Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture. It took several hours to catch the dog and bring him to the safety of a coastguard vessel. The dog’s collar has no clues about the owner such as address and contact numbers.

Oil refinery ablaze after devastating Japan earthquake, tsunami

The government has confirmed 18 deaths, with the number expected to rise. It follows the 8.9-magnitude earthquake which sent a 4-metre wall of water inland across the Miyagi prefecture . There’s considerable destruction – 200 people have been washed away. Buildings, cars and ships were also swept by the raging waters. Several are missing on Japan’s Sendai island. The first wave has also reached Russia’s Kuril islands to the north, reportedly around a metre high. There are several fires along Japan’s eastern coastline, and 4 million homes are without power. The Prime Minister’s ordered an emergency response team to tackle the disaster – with aircraft scrambled to the worst-affected area. Communication is crippled and Tokyo’s Norita International Airport has been closed. The entire Pacific region is on Tsunami alert – with Hawaii braced to be hit within the next few hours.
